Im Vlado from Croatia,53 years old.Breathing problems since childhood
Since 1993 I have been regularly visited by a pulmonologist .Im.non-smoker ,sportsmen
And i have survived one big and long inflammation .
February 1994: My best spirometry result. FVC 107% FEV1 88%
august 1995 my FEV1 was only14.7%, at age 30
18 months under supervision of pulmonologist including 2 months stay in hospital, my FEV1 dropped from 88% to 15%. Unbelievable 73% drop
Sounds unbelievably but today i know that 04.09.1995 was day of my salvation.
I have been sent to tooth surgery and the day after tooth surgery I started to feel better ..Today my FEV1 is 29% .In the time that i became sick it was no internet time,my doctors didnt tell me nothing about copd just :" This is nothing serious, it’s just your old disease and don’t worry you’re young and we’ll do everything possible to help you." What i am doing now and its most helpfull therapy for me?
1.Postural drainage to clean my airways
Im not on O2
therapy: spiriva1 ,seretide 500 2x
In the moment 6 days with fever are behind me but still a have lot of wheezing and that it worries me.Can someone give me some good advice to help me.
Many thanks for answers
Vlado
Thanks for advice.I will ask my doctors and than in pharmacy .Winters is always bad time for me.Soon when came summer than im without mucus.
There is a medicine in the USA called Mucinex. The generic is guaifenesin. It helps to keep the mucus thinned so that it is easier to cough up. Ask your doc about guaifenesin. It is a widely used medicine here.
3 hours ago i went too se my doctor. He is satisfied how i reacted on therapy.
Antibiotic 2 more days and Corticosteroid till end of the week.I hope soon came nice weather so ill go outside for a walking.Monday ill go to work.Im glad that acapella helps you,ill try in the future get one i think it will be helpfull for me specially in winter.
Vladimir: I have and use the acapella and it works well. You have to play with the settings to get it to where it is most effective for you. Maybe your doc can set it up. It causes back-pressure which forces you to cough, bringing up mucus from deep in your lungs. Stay hydrated and don't use anything with a "decongestant" in it as it will dry out the mucus and you won't be able to cough it up.
You have been through a lot and I pray the your condition will soon improve. Walking would be a good thing along with exercise.
In the year 2011 i had it pneumonia (two days after vaccination).High fever but without any coughing, mucus and wheezing and i recover in 5 just days. This time i was infected with flu.(vaccinated 2 months ago didnt help). It was high fever for 4 days with wheezing. After using antibiotic and medrol (corticosteroids)i feel better,no fever, less coughing but i feel this time its not like it was 2011.I know that i was younger.I hope that soon ill go outside for a little walk and continue with excersise.
I dont have nebuliser at home.Ive been told that for my condition,my dg Bronchiectasie its Postural drainage maintance to manage my condition.I consider to buy "acapella" to better clean my lungs from mucus. Can anyone tell me personally expirience with acapella ?
thanks in advance
We are Southern Hemisphere - the flu last winter was particularly bad with many people having to be hospitalized with pneumonia. It seems to have stayed around well after Winter with many people still having flu during the summer months. Do you not have a nebuliser as it can be much more effective than an inhaler especially if you have an infection.
Hai Don
And I have heard that this vaccine not protect from flu very well
I drink lot of water all day.I continue to use it antibiotic, ill make drainage in the morning and in the eavning.
And im at home now.I need time for curing myself and bring me again in best shape is possible.
When i get better only then ill go on my work and than ill continue with excersise, and walking
In the year 2011 I was vaccinated against flu.2 days later very high fever dg Pneumonia.Hospital 7 days
In the same time (probably because of using antibiotics) my old disease (colitis ulcerosa) is return.
1 Month later i was in hospital again, on surgery and they cut my colon.Since than i have ileostoma (little bag on my stomach)
After that "horror time" i was never vaccinated till this year.I was alone in office ,at the time of flu i have avoid to stay in crowd. and I did not get the flu
This year i lost my own office and im now with 2 more employers in one small office (and here i was infected)
So iI decided this year maybe it be better to get vaccinated. And this time i get flu
But i will continiu with vaccination i know i must.
I have read a few reports that this years vaccine was not very effective against the latest flu strain. I too got the flu as well as all in my house. Very hard to get rid of. You may need another round of antibiotics as well as your mother and brother. I have been fighting the effects of this flu for over a month. Stay hydrated - LOTS of water and rest.
I know you are worried about coughing but don't be; that's how you will be able to get rid of the mucous which will help you breathe easier.
Hope some others will add their comments here. You are in my prayers.
Today i was by doctor and he prescribe me another supplementary medicament Atrovent 3x2 puff and tbl of Medrol.
Also proceed antibiotic Fromilide and usually therapy Spiriva+Seretide. And i make postural drainage to clean my lungs + lot of liquids

Don im a panic man but ill have try pursed lips breathing and now im already feel much better.I also loose my appetit yesterday but for 10 min its commin back .When i breath in pursed lips mode on the exhale i start to coughing so i must be very careful. The nearest Hospital is 27 miles away but in this hospital i was cured 23 years ago and otherhospital is about 55 miles away. Now i know best way to manage enemy its learn how he can harm you.Like always knowledge is power
Vlado
Vladimir: Don't panic! Slow down your breathing by doing "pursed-lips" breathing: breathe slowly in through your nose as deep as you can; maybe for 4 seconds; then breathe out through your lips like you were whistling for twice as long (8 seconds). Do this whenever you're feeling SOB. The higher end of your saturation is good especially not being on o2. Do as much research as you can on COPD; the more you know the better. Unlike in Croatia; here in the US we have many sources of help in the way of drugs, specialists and treatments. I will repeat: DON'T PANIC!
When i go now to emergency room they will answer me . Go to your doctor.
And his working afternoon. When i sit quietly my saturation is from 93-97.Im wait and hope to recieve mail from specialist and than i call my doctor. Thanks Audrey.Ive never been iin this situation till now
You should be seen by a doctor at this point, go to the hospital emergency room.
I need help again .Fever is gone but i feel that my conditions is much worse than before inflamattion.
I'm worried because in 22 years i had a lot of similarly inflammation for couple of day but none was like this one.Fever is gone but simply i talk very hard, quickly loose my voice and SOB is very strong .Much stronger than before inflammation.I send e-mail to my pulmolonogist and now im waiting for replay
Any idea what happen.Has anyone gone through like that (expirience)
thanks for advice. Vlado
Hallo Audrey and Don
Since saturday im taking antibiotic "Fromilide".
3 days of high fever .Today fever is normal but wheezing and coughing its still here.
Friday I'll go to see my doctor and then maybe ill get another antibiotic or prednison.
I drink lot of water. This time mucus its white .
. I dont think that i have asthma component because ventolin does not work for me but maybe im wrong.
I found this site accidentally just on google search copd forum.
Thanks for advice soon ill go to sleep its 1 hour after midnight
Vlado: Please take note that none here are medical professionals; we post information as it has worked for us over the years. The wheezing sounds to me like it may be an asthma component of your condition. Some of us use an "Albuterol" inhaler for wheezing. Ask your doctor about that.
We all hope you find some relief.
PS: Please let us know how your found this site.....Thank you and welcome to our little group.
Also; please use the "Contact us" form and provide us with an email address.
Have you been given any antibiotics for the infection? Drinking plenty of water will help to thin the mucus. It sometimes takes days to recover from the flu. If the wheezing continues check back with your doctor.
